St Lucia is located in the Eastern Caribbean and is part of the Leeward Islands. St Lucia is
the top part of a volcano that the base is well below the ocean's surface. Because of the
mountains both above and below the oceans surface makes for some unbelievable sights
for divers. Even the most experienced scuba divers will amazed with the underwater
paradise of St Lucia. Both beginner and advanced divers will marvel at the amazing marine
life, black coral trees, gigantic barrel sponges and purple vase sponges. There are several
sunken ships that have developed artificial reefs that attract turtles, nurse sharks, golden
spotted eels, sea horse and angel fish, amongst many other species of Caribbean marine
life. Just maybe you'll even see "The Thing" (only if you do a night dive, though)- a
mysterious serpentine of mythical proportions seen regularly at Anse Chastanet.
There are several spectacular diving sites just off St Lucia, ranging
from easy to challenging:
- Keyhole Pinnacles - 4 sea mounts rising from deep abyss to
within just a few feet of the surface.
- Superman's Flight - a drift dive on a gentle wall which drops to
1,600 feet at the ocean's floor.
- Coral Gardens - Start at the base of Gros Piton from a depth
50 ft to 15ft
- Anse La Raye - midway up the west coast is a drift dive on a
superb wall, where huge boulders cover a shallower slope
creating amazing formations to explore.
- Fairy Land - Off Anse Chastenet is a plateau that slopes
gently from 40 - 60 feet. The reefs fall away to a depth of 140
feet in a unique coral chain, meandering out from the Bay.
- St Lucia has several shipwrecks that provide adventure and
exploration for all levels of divers. Waiwinette Freighter - the
strong currents makes this dive for experienced divers only, 90
ft depth, on the southern end of the island.
- Lesleen M Shipwreck: 165-foot freighter is an upright ship in
60ft of water. It was intentionally sunk by the Dept. of
Fisheries in 1986.
There are many full service dive shops to choose from on St
Lucia, offering instruction, service and rentals. Marine
Conservation is a high priority for the dive shop owners. They
also encourage you to visit the award-winning Soufriere Marine
management Area on the west coast of the island.
